When loading for historical or replica .45-70 Government rifles, always observe conservative pressure limits. For antique actions (Springfield Trapdoors, Remington Rolling Blocks, Winchester Model 1886 and similar vintage rifles) use data limited to 25,000 CUP or less. If you plan to use black powder loads in these older rifles, consider annealing the case mouth to ensure the case will properly seal the chamber at lower pressures — click here for instructions.

For modern .45-70 rifles built to contemporary proof standards, smokeless hunting data can be held up to 40,000 CUP, but only when the firearm’s action and barrel are rated for those pressures. Always match load data to the rifle’s condition, proofing, and the authoritative reloading source you trust.
