Historical Background: The Origin of the .50 Alaskan
The .50 Alaskan was developed through a collaborative effort by Harold Johnson and Bill Fuller on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, with one mission in mind: create a better cartridge for hunting massive Brown Bears.
To achieve this, they started with the .348 Winchester case, then blew it out and necked it up to accept a .510-inch diameter bullet. The result was a powerhouse round with incredible stopping power—ideal for hunters and guides who needed a cartridge that could handle some of the most dangerous big game in North America.
