Originally developed as a black powder rifle cartridge, the .40-82 Winchester was used in the Winchester Model 1886 lever-action rifle and Winchester Model 1885 single-shot rifle. It was a popular hunting cartridge of its era, valued for its performance on North American game. Winchester later offered the .40-82 in smokeless powder ammunition before discontinuing the cartridge in 1935. Today, the .40-82 Winchester remains of interest to cartridge reloaders, vintage rifle enthusiasts, and shooters restoring obsolete Winchester rifles..
