HISTORY:  The concept was take a 40 S&W necked down to accept 9mm bullets and duplicate 357 Magnum ballistics from a compact sized semi-auto handgun.   The one trade off is a larger powder capacity fired from a short barrel does produce more noticeable muzzle blast.  Versatility wise, 40 S&W can be transformed into a 357 SIG with a changing of barrels if such accessories are offered in your make and model pistol.
