Legendary Field & Stream editor and custom rifle builder Warren Page played a key role in its popularity. A devoted 6mm enthusiast, Page promoted the all-around performance of his wildcat cartridge—the .240 Page, which was based on necking down the .308 Winchester case to accept 6mm (.243″) bullets.

Because the .243 Winchester was based on the readily available .308 Winchester parent case, it was simple for reloaders to form cases, resize brass, and develop accurate handloads for everything from varmints to mule deer. The cartridge gained rapid popularity among handloaders, hunters, and competitive shooters alike, and soon factory rifles chambered in .243 Winchester entered the market from major manufacturers.
