.223 Remington is a commercial version of the 5.56 NATO (5.56X45mm) and at the time could be found in a handful of rifles, mostly Remington Model 700 bolt-action and naturally in a AR-15. Most sporting rifles then would have a slower twist ranging from 1:12 to 1:14 so bullet weights would ideally be 55-grains or less. Barrel twist for rifles designated for 5.56 chambering are faster 1:7 or 1:8 inch twist rates.
