222 Special,55-grain MC bullets manufactured by Remington Arms for ARMALITE COMPANY

During the development stages in 1954 Armalite redesigned the 222 Remington to increase powder space while keeping the OAL about the same.  This altered cartridge was classified as the 222 Special and in 1956 there was a name change to 223 Remington.
