Back in the retail gun show era of Duck Creek, CAS was promoted then. This is going back to the 1990’s. Shooting revolvers and lever-actions is just pure fun, having an excuse to assume a alias and dress the part adds to the excitement. As you can see from some of the photos attire and gear range from fancy gambler types to plain old cow folks, basically what ever your imagination and budget will take you.
One can find active shooting clubs in every state. Actually most states have multiple clubs. To find a club near you here is a link to current clubs listed on the SASS website. The clubs mention below helped with supplying content and expertise. Shooting styles remain the same across all clubs, the only real differences is settings.
The Powder Creek Cowboys proudly call the historic Monticello Township area of Lenexa,
Kansas, their home—a fitting place for a sport rooted in Old West tradition. Located within
the Powder Creek Shooting Park, the club’s beautifully themed range offers an inviting and
immersive setting for both new and experienced shooters. Our goal is simple: provide a
friendly, welcoming place for folks to discover the fun, safety, and camaraderie that Cowboy
Action Shooting has to offer.
The range itself is something special. Shooters enjoy a collection of fully covered,
thoughtfully recreated Old West buildings inspired by real Kansas history, including a
classic jail, the C.M. Condon Bank of Coffeyville, the Alamo Saloon, the Drovers Store, and the
Dewey Cattle Corral. These structures do more than set the stage; they keep everyone
comfortable with shade, fans, lighting, and year-round usability. Whether it’s the heat of
summer or the cool days of winter, matches continue almost every week, with cancellations
only when ice or severe cold makes the roads unsafe.
Meet the BRC Vaqueros call the Boulder Rifle Club, Boulder, Colorado home. The Vaqueros are not a SASS club and therefore have the flexibility for slight changes considered beneficial to that club “such as modifying categories, or allowing equipment that would normally not be permitted. This means I will do things that SASS won’t, like allowing adults to use 22’s at our matches so we can get new people engaged with far less equipment and ammo expense.” (aka Maker-Wright, match director)
Stages are set up using a a variety of steel plates that compose of a variety from stationery, spinning and falling plus the famous big blue bear. Shooting is year round (unless snowing or raining), first Saturday of the month. Here the cowboys and cowgirls help set up and take down the set.
Meet the River City Regulators now California’s oldest SASS club from Davis, California. This coming October will host the California State Black Powder Shoot and the Smokeless Spaghetti Western. December there is Christmas Blast based on the movie “Christmas Story”, notice a few cowboys dressed in Ralphy Pink Bunny Pajamas
